I was struck first by the following sentence: "...[he] knows that he cannot say to her ‘I love you madly’, because... these words have already been written..." To me, this seems to be the heart of the postmodern perspective: a preoccupation with "original" thought, or, failing that, an absurdly rigorous sense of obligation to constantly cite your work.
